As mentioned in Dave Williams’ report from last Saturday’s Oulton Park meeting, a special presentation was made in the Formula Ford section of the paddock to Ian “Diz Smith”, to mark 50 years of service to motorsport.

Fellow Formula Ford co-ordinator Matt Hawkins secretly planned the presentation a few weeks ago and organised a whip-round amongst the Post 89 and Pre 90 competitors when they gathered at Oulton Park on the 31st May. Matt was delighted with the drivers’ response and together with a contribution from BRSCC HQ, he had enough to commission a painting by Steve Jones, the Oulton Park Press Officer. The subject was Malcolm Barfoot in his Formula E Crossle 25F circa 1988, from a photo by Phil Rainford.

The painting was duly presented to a ‘gob-smacked’ Diz (and that is a rarity) by Pre-90 driver David Murphy along with a fantastic cake produced by David’s wife Natalie. There were also enough funds left over to get Diz some Thomas Cook vouchers which will help him take his long suffering wife Diane on a well-deserved holiday.

Diz was truly taken back by the presentation. “I can’t believe that I didn’t twig that something was up. I thought it odd that ‘er in doors, my son Steve and his fiancée Tracey were all keen to attend the meeting! I’m really grateful and I’d like to finish as I started by saying thank you one and all.”

Congratulations Diz, here’s to the next milestone and thanks to Matt Hawkins and everyone else who helped to pull the presentation together.
