Former Volkswagen Racing Cup Champion turned BTCC racer Tony Gilham is to return to the series in which he made his name. The 32-year-old from Kent will lead a multi-car team into battle in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup, and says he is relishing the chance to compete in a series he loves.

Gilham is facing a busy season – in addition to his Cup challenge at the wheel of a Tony Gilham Racing-prepared Golf GTI, he is to continue his British Touring Car Championship campaign with an ex-Team Dynamics Honda Civic.

Tony’s confirmed VW Cup team-mates will be another championship returnee, Richard Kingsnorth, and Fiesta racer Andy Wilmot. All three will race Mk V Golf GTIs. The team hopes to confirm a fourth car, for an exciting young novice, later this month.

“It all came about because my new garage – Tony Gilham Ltd at Dartford – built a demo car,” said Tony. “We decided that we’d like to build a race car, were approached by a sponsor, and having decided to come back to the championship several other drivers came along and asked us to run them too. Now here we are with what looks like being a four-car team.

“I am delighted to be going back to the VW Cup. I’ve never fallen out of love with the championship – it helped me massively early in my career and now it is time to put something back into it.”

Former schoolboy BMX cycle racing world champion Gilham started in motorsport in 1999 in a Formula 600 single-seater. In 2005 he won the 750 Motor Club’s MR2 Championship and the following season won a race in his debut season in the Volkswagen Racing Cup. He switched from a Beetle to a Golf GTI for 2007 and won two rounds on his way to the championship title. Following successes in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB he turned to the BTCC in 2011.

Tony Gilham Racing’s debut as a team in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup will come at Oulton Park over the Easter weekend (7-9 April). For more infomation check out www.vw-cup.co.uk
