CADWELL FAMILY FORTUNES

Here's to you Messrs Robinson…Mark and brother Simon were both race winners at Cadwell. Photo: Bourne Photographic.

Last weekend the BRSCC Northern Centre staged their second and final race meeting of the season and the 17 races at Cadwell Park proved to be very exciting, very eventful and dominated by three families.

It was a Robinson’s affair in the S&G Response backed Ford XR Challenge. Simon’s XR2 was first across the line in race one quickly followed by his brother Mark. The roles were reversed in race two so the brothers had an equal share of the spoils. That wasn’t the case in the XR3i class where Welsh maestro John-Ifan Jones took both class wins.

Another pair of brothers were also to the fore in the Celtic Speed Scottish Mini Cooper Cup. David Sleigh won the race with brother Tim third and Vic Covey sandwiched between in second. David was again the victor in race two but Tim dropped to fourth to be replaced by Chris Smiley, with Vic Covey again second.

Both Scottish Legends Finals also proved to be a family affair. Lee Fitzpatrick and John Marshall were the respective winners but it was the father and son pairing of Nick and Dean Brace who dominated the podiums. Dad Nick was second in the first final but it was son Dean who scored a brace of podium finishes with a third in Final One and second in Final Two.

The picturesque Lincolnshire circuit hosted the 5th and 6th rounds of the Design911.com Championship. Dave Clark and Adam Croft were the big winners in their respective Boxster and 924 classes, each taking pole position and victory in both races. Richard Sykes and Alfred Piesinger were second in both outings in Boxsters and 924s respectively. John Bearman was the third Boxster home in race one while Gerry Taylot took that place in race two. In the 924s, third place in each race went to Mark Marshall and Jayson Flegg.

Single-seater action was provided by the Formula Jedi Championship, which once again provided some great racing action. After qualifying for race one, Scott Stevens took pole position. However, it was James Fletcher who went on to win his first Formula Jedi race after taking the lead into the first corner and keeping it all the way to the flag. Dan Cook had a good run to take second ahead of Paul Butcher and a strong drive from Barry Armstrong produced a fourth place finish ahead of Matthew Bett.

The second Jedi race was marred by two safety car periods, after an incident between Fletcher and Stevens on the opening lap took them both out of the race. Only eight racing laps were run out of an expected fourteen, but it was Richard Mitcham who led those laps from pole to achieve his fifth win of the season. Three tenths of a second split HS Motorsport’s drivers Mark Gellatly and Matthew Bett who took second and third respectively.

It was a case of ‘as you were’ in the Scottish Classic Sports & Saloon Car Championship with both races returning the same top three. Andrew Smith took the plaudits in his Morgan +8, with John Marshall second and Stan Bernard third respectively.

The Drayton Manor Park MG Metro Cup was the exception to the rule at Cadwell, being the only championship to have one race. The chequered flag was taken by Andrew Ashton with fellow Class C protagonists Mike Williams and James Dunkley completing the podium.
