CATERHAM DECIDER AT SNETTERTON

Only Dan Denis arrives at Snetterton with the title safely in the bag having secured the Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight R400 Championship at Silverstone at the beginning of this month. In the Drivers Republic Roadsport A’s it’s a three way fight between Raphael Fiorentino, Mike Steadman & Graham Johnson. The Frenchman and reigning Roadsport B champion leads Steadman by a single point but with a double header there are still plenty of points to race for.

The scrap will be equally intense in the Roadsport B races where Gordon Sawyer, Paul Brannan and Trevor Fowell are all in contention for title glory. Fowell had a dismal time at Cadwell Park last month and has slipped to third. However, he has the advantage in terms of dropped scores, though he’ll have to finish second if Sawyer wins both races, which is entirely possible.

The picture is clearer in the Power Torque Superlight R300 where Jon Walker’s consistency throughout the season has made the title his to lose – he needs only to take a third place to secure the championship. However, if it is wet, and chaos ensues, either one of James Sharrock, Paul Wilson, Jonny Leroux and Matt Draper could all overtake Walker at the top of the points table.

Although not in contention for the overall podium, Robert Springate will be another driver to keep an eye on this weekend. Robert will be piloting the newly built dpr motorsport R300 and at 21 years old he will be the youngest driver taking part. Despite having passed his ARDS test less than a year ago the Bromley based Caterham technician demonstrated his enormous potential with a first and third place at the Roadsport A Brands Hatch double header in August.

In the R400’s, with Denis already champion, the focus is on the remaining podium places which will be scrapped over by Peter Ratcliff and Simon Young. Both have shown that they can match and beat Denis’ pace and although the student has won the most races, Young and Ratcliff have pushed him to the line every time.

It’s not only Caterhams looking forward to an exciting conclusion to the season. The BRSCC Formula Jedi Championship has two races ahead of them with no less than five drivers still aiming for top spot! Richard Mitcham holds a slender 6 point lead from Andrew Ward and behind them are Stuart Abbott, current champion Jack Smith and Dan Cook. Any of the five could take the title come Sunday afternoon.

Brett Walker cleaned up in the LMA Euro Saloon & Sports Car Championship a while ago and most of the Class winners have also been confirmed. However, Class C is still to be decided between Kevin Wendt and Nick Hayes.

The inaugural BRSCC RaceTV Open Sportscar Series comes to a close this weekend with the final two races of the season. The East Anglian Centre have nominated both races for the Archie Scott Brown Trophy, an annual trophy that the Centre awards each season. Josh Fisher, Jim Hutchinson and Alan Hogg will be amongst the favourites.
