AVON TYRES FORMULA FORD 1600 CHAMPIONSHIPS
This is a big year for Formula Ford 1600 as the category powered by the legendary 1600cc “Kent” engine celebrates 50 years since its inception. The formulah continues to be the ideal first step into single-seater racing and the BRSCC caters for both career minded & 'club' drivers by offering National, Regional and Circuit-based Championships. These have one major common theme in that they enable competitors to enjoy their racing in a very competitive but friendly environment.
With aerodynamic aids banned, young up and coming drivers can learn how to maximise mechanical grip before moving on to more advanced categories while, for those who compete for fun, the lack of wings makes it possible for a pursuing car to follow the one ahead closely around a corner. This results in fantastic multi-car battles taking place in just about every race.
The regulations have hardly changed since they were drawn up way back in 1967 which leads to a wide range of cars being available to take part – no need to buy a brand new chassis if you don’t have the budget. The Northern Championship is divided into 5 Classes based on the age of the vehicle.
Despite this continuity, the formula is under-going major changes which has seen a boom in entries, particularly in the Pro National Championship. This began when it was nominated as one of 16 World-wide feeder series for the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200k Scholarship Shootout at which the winner receives a $200,000 scholarship to graduate into the following year's Cooper Tyres USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, the first step on the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tyres.
The process to make the category even more attractive is ongoing and the BRSCC has been liaising closely with those involved with Formula Ford 1600. For 2017, the Pro National Championship is switching from 2 X 20 minute race weekends to a 3 X 15 minute race format. This promises even more excitement for drivers and spectators, especially as the first 8 places on the third grid are going to mixed-up.
Meanwhile, to ease travel costs and make budgets go further, the BRSCC also run the following Championships.
Clubman National Championship:To help those with limited funds compete in the National Championship, 2017 sees the introduction of the Clubman series which offers a lower cost nationwide competition.
Triple Crown:To cater for drivers in the Midlands and the South, we have the Formula Ford 1600 Triple Crown. In 2017, this will comprise of a trio of triple headers at the current and former Grand Prix venues of Silverstone, Donington and Brands Hatch.
Tourist Trophy: Another introduction for 2017, this visits four tracks in each of the Home Nations – Knockhill, Kirkistown, Anglesey and Oulton Park.
Northern Championship:The North West is a real hot-bed of Formula Ford 1600 and this series has rounds at Oulton Park & Anglesey with a double header ‘away day’ at Donington Park.
Champion of Oulton:A single venue series staged at the glorious parkland venue in Cheshire.
Star of Anglesey: The most successful driver in our races at this track, which has fantastic views over the Snowdonian mountain range, will be crowned the Star of Anglesey.
Formula Ford Festival:The season concludes with the category’s centrepiece event of the year – the prestigious and long standing Formula Ford Festival.
BRSCC Formula Ford racing is tough, close and very cost effective and for over 50 years has proved to be the ideal training ground for young drivers looking to progress up the motorsport career ladder.
