DONINGTON SET FOR SIX HOUR SPECTACULAR

CATEGORIES:

Donington Park will host the six hour European Le Mans Series race this weekend.

Officials from BRSCC HQ and the Midland Centre will be at the heart of this weekend’s European Le Mans Series meeting at Donington Park, which will be the first time the prestigious series has visited the circuit since 2006. The meeting got underway this morning with free practice sessions for both the ELMS and the Speed EuroSeries.

The highlight of the three-day meeting is of course the six-hour ELMS race on Sunday, which starts at 11.55am. However, for the fifty new drivers in the 2012 Octane Caterham Academy Championship, the highlight of this weekend will undoubtedly be their first ever circuit race, which takes place tomorrow afternoon.

Starting out the year as complete novices, the drivers have now completed the ‘sprint’ stage of the series (the first three events being just against the clock) and will now line up alongside each other on the grid for the first time. As usual, the Academy is split into two parallel groups to accommodate all the entrants, meaning two races on Saturday; one each for Gp1 and Gp2; so double the action for the spectators!

Alex Gurr and Matthew Lawrence have shared the Gp1 wins so far, with Hertford based Gurr currently a single point ahead of jet pilot Lawrence in the points table; though the red car of Tristan Judge is getting closer to the very front. In Gp2, 53 year-old Welsh driver Peter Fortune has taken his exciting style and unmistakable car to the top of the table, closely followed by Stockport driver Stephen Nuttall. Like Gp1 one, the pair have shared the wins so far, but just behind them and tied on points, Michael Gazda and Danny Kileen will be keen to progress to the top step of the podium. Expect both Academy races to be close!

In addition to the Octane Caterham Academy, there are two supporting races for the aforementioned Speed EuroSeries and a fifty-five minute race for the Alan Mann Trophy for Masters Pre-66 Touring Cars.
