EASTER WEEKEND ON THE SILVERSTONE NATIONAL
The BRSCC’s ever-busy Midland Centre run their first two-day meeting of the season this weekend and it will take place on the 1.64 miles of the Silverstone National Circuit.
Twenty-three races are packed into what will be a fantastic Easter Weekend and the meeting has attracted a bumper entry in excess of two hundred cars.
The Silverstone two-dayer has a strong Mazda bias with almost half of the races starring the three Ma5da Racing championships. MK1 champion Tom Roche sets out on the long and challenging road to retain his title and there will be many contenders looking to lower his flag, including last year’s runner up Adam Gore.
Third in the Mk1s last season was Jordan Stilp but he has switched his attention to the Ma5da Cup, which features the Mk3, where he will again come up against Adam Gore who is competing in both. Luke Herbert will be aiming to go one better this year, having come second to Rob Boston last year.
Making their much-anticipated championship bow on Saturday will be the Ma5da MX150-Rs. The car stems from Mills Extreme Vehicles Excocet road car and is based on the MX5 Mk1 1.8 running gear.
Adding a single-seater dimension to the proceedings will be the Wellingborough manufactured Formula Jedis. Powered by a 1000cc high performance motorbike engine these ‘slicks and wings’ cars can go from 0-60mph in just three seconds. 2010 champion Andrew Dunn returns after missing almost a full season through injury and he will certainly challenge Richard Mitcham, as will Dan Clowes, Matt Bett, Stu Abbott and Paul Butcher.
The Dunlop backed Fiesta Championship looks set to be as competitive as ever. Runaway 2011 Si champion John Langridge is aiming to put together back-to-back titles and Nik Barton will be a contender for the Zetec crown. In the ST class, predicting a winner is difficult as last year’s top three have all moved on but this creates a great opportunity for the likes of Nicholas Bowers and Andrew Wilmot to stake their claims.
Although it had a few ‘exhibition’ races last year, the Motorsport News supported Fiesta Junior Championship has its first official round on Saturday and a very encouraging six cars have entered, with more in the pipeline.
Joining the fray on Easter Sunday is the BRSCC Alfa Romeo Championship, which enjoys support from Alfashop for a seventh consecutive year. Class E is where the most competitive racing is and it has produced the champion over the last two years, with both being female drivers, Mel Healey and Emma Karwacki respectively.
Another series making their official bow as a championship at Silverstone is the Teekay Couplings Production GTi Championship. The GTis ran as a series with the BRSCC last year and its success was rewarded with full championship status for 2012. Simon Hill, Nick Porter and Andy Knowlton were the dominant forces last season and each will be confident of taking the inaugural title.
