INTERNATIONAL ACTION AT ANGLESEY

CATEGORIES:

The two day meeting staged by the BRSCC’s North Western Centre at Anglesey Circuit on 26/27th June had a distinctly international flavour with guest appearances from the Scottish Legends and Irish Global Lights series. In addition, a number of drivers from various worldwide destinations competed in other events and there was even a Globe-Trotting car out on the track.

In the first encounter for the Legends from North of the Border, Ben Mason established a 1 second advantage on lap 2 which he maintained until the finish. Mason was also first home the next time the 5/8th scale vehicles took to the tarmac however it wasn’t until the final lap that he hit the front courtesy of an error from erstwhile leader Alasdair Gould. These successes put Mason at the back of the grid for Saturday’s final and although he charged spectacularly through the field he was still a tantalising 0.182 secs behind winner Tony Caig when the chequered flag fell.

Caig also won Sunday’s Final after Gould had got the upperhand in a tussle with David Hunter to take Heat 1 and Carol Brown took the spoils in the second. She seized the initiative when Caig slithered wide onto the grass at Turn 1. This loss of momentum eventually led to him losing the lead a couple of corners later at Church.

Although only 8 Global Lights made the trip across the Irish Sea they often ran in tight jostling groups during their 4 races and provided some of the best action of the weekend. The results of these battles had a certain amount of symmetry with Paul Drennan and Mark Braden each taking the flag first on Saturday and Sunday.

Australian Jordan Skinner made it 5 wins out of 6 in the Post-89 class of the Avon Tyres Northern FF1600 Championship with a brace of victories on his debut at the North Wales track. His 10 second margin on Saturday increased to 17 the following day after his closest rival Neil Patten failed to finish. Lee Hannan also did the double over the Pre-90 contenders.

David Clarke looked set to take his second win of the weekend in Sunday’s BRSCC Porsche Championship thrash but his Boxster came to grief at Rocket on lap 8. This handed the laurels to former Caterham star, Gerry Taylor. Things could have been much worse for Clarke as on Saturday Martin Braybrook made the long journey from Lyon to Rhosneigr only to find that his Boxster was still en route from a track day in France and it eventually arrived 5 minutes too late for him to take part. At least he was able to join in from the back of the grid the following day. Meanwhile Steven Brown was unbeatable in the 924 category.

This season the BRSCC alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship has centred on the battle between father and daughter Chris and Mel Healey who have respectively dominated Classes C and E to head the points table. Mel’s retirement from Sunday’s round may prove to be the decisive moment when the season ends. The 156 of Neil Smith (which once toured the Globe in the World Touring Car Championship) was the fastest Alfa in Wales and comfortably took the flag first on both outings.

Paul Bishop was another to take home a pair of winners’ laurels following the latest rounds of the BRS Recovery Ford XR Challenge both of which were staged on Sunday. Most impressive was his second victory in which his Fiesta was leading by the end of the opening tour despite starting 9th due to a partially reversed grid. John-Ifan Jones and Mark Robinson (in Chris Jones’ car) shared the spoils in the Escort class having battled hard all day.

The MG’s contesting the Cockshoot Cup enjoyed a single outing on Saturday. No one could match the pace of the man with a famous namesake as David Coulthard brought his ZR 190 home almost 12 seconds to the good.
