KPM, the Volkswagen Racing Cup team founded by former F1 mechanic Kevin Poole, is set to come of age in 2011 with a five-car squad at most events. Poole, who earned his F1 spurs with Honda Racing, has just completed preparation work on two new Mk V Golf GTIs.

KPM will field Golfs for Dutch drivers Peter Lettinga and his friend Jan Rosekrans, and one of the new GTIs will be used as a hire car for drivers wishing to dip in and out of the FUCHS Lubricants-backed championship.

The hire Golf will be debuted at Oulton Park on Easter Monday by Cup race-winner James Walker. Says Poole: “James is unable to contest the full season, so I am hoping that he will give the new car a successful baptism and we can build on things from there. Jan is very keen to get out there in his new car and race alongside Peter, whose Golf we completed late last year.

“I am also delighted to welcome two new drivers to KPM in novice Cameron Thompson and Phil Morris.”.

Thompson will race a Beetle RSI and Morris the specially adapted DSG-gearbox Golf GTI in which he made his racing debut in 2010. Phil is one of the championship’s two disabled drivers – he lost a leg in a motorcycle accident – and finds the DSG Golf, with its semi-automatic gearbox and steering wheel-mounted gearchange ‘paddles’, ideal for his needs. He raced the Golf to a top-10 finish in one of his 2010 outings.

“In 2011 I’m aiming to extend myself and the car a little more,” says Phil, Purchasing Manager for championship title sponsor FUCHS UK. “KPM is completely dedicated to racing and Kevin’s focus is set on continuous improvement for car and driver. At the same time, there seems to be a comfortable fit with the team’s driver line-up: we are all keen to battle but at the same time enjoy the racing experience. I think Kevin’s determination and hard work are true to the ‘ethos’ of this championship and I’m pleased to be a part of it.”.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup is supported by FUCHS Lubricants, Hankook Tyres, Ceva Logistics, ECM Vehicle Delivery, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Superchips and Milltek Sport. This season the series features 14 races at seven meetings, one of them at Zandvoort in the Netherlands and the rest supporting the British F3 and British GT series.
