LOOKING NORTH TO CADWELL

It was a chilly Cadwell Park in 1990, that saw the Ford Saloon Car Championship make its maiden appearance and a naive and younger Kevin standing wondering what he had got himself into. Since then, many motorsport championships later, Kevin still feels passionate for motorsport and continues to co-ordinate championships including the Competition Car Insurance/Dunlop Fiesta Championship and BRS Recovery Ford XR Challenge which will both enjoy double headers at the scenic Lincolnshire track.

Cadwell is a demanding twisty track and Fiesta drivers just love the challenge. The championship entries have had to be split this year to accomodate the extra drivers who wish to race. This means that the three classes will run as Class A and B together (Fiesta Si and Fiesta Zetec) and Class C (Fiesta ST) will run on their own. In Class A, Tim Bennett heads Ed Cockill and Ruari Fairbairns whilst Class B sees Scott Baines heading Harry Cockill by a mere one point. The battle for Class C sees Scotland’s Rory Bryant with a three point lead over Mark Tilbury but Jeremy Gumbley and Nick Pope are close behind.

This weekend is something of an away-day for the Ford XR’s. Own BRS backed championship is based in the North West and they will be joined at Cadwell by the Scottish XR. BRS XR2 leader Paul Bishop holds a slender lead in Class A from Simon Robinson and Steve Poole. In Class B, Mark Robinson holds the top spot from Anglesey's John-Ifan Jones and Cheshire’s Marcus Riley. In the Scottish variety Tim Sleigh has built a commanding lead with Martin Buchan and Dave Colville his closet challengers.

As ever the Ma5da MX5 Championship will be out in numbers with a total of 55 cars entered for the meeting. Defending Champion Tom Roche, currently lying 2nd in the championship, will be out to chase more victories in his attempt to obtain back to back titles. However Jonathan Greensmith and current leader Robert Boston will be looking to go even better, but don’t discount seasoned drivers like Paul Sheard along with rookies, Adam Gore and Matt Davies.

. The April Snetterton round of the BRSCC Alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship produced the highly unusual, if not unique, situation of father and daughter – Chris and Mel Healey – tied at the top of the points table. Both then enjoyed outstanding races at Oulton Park. Chris won Class C in his 3 litre GTV and Mel took a fighting second in Class E with her 156 after a race-long battle with 2009 Champion, Paul Plant. This gives Chris a 2 point advantage going into this weekend’s double header.

The Sports 2000 triumvirate of Duratec, Pinto & Historics are also on the schedule with a race each on Sunday afternoon. In the Duratecs Mike Jenvey is developing the new March and similarly Patrick Sherrington has been doing wonders with the MCR. However, the person to beat has to be Neil Burroughs in the Gunn TS10. In the Pinto’s Jim McDougall (Tiga SC79) has returned to give the Andy Mathew, Paul Streat and David Houghton a run for their money so expect some close action at the front!! Jim McDougall also leads the Historic Championship from Mike Johns & Mark Marsh.

Cadwell Park hosts races three and four of the 2010 Porsche Club Championship season, with Mark McAleer the main man in form after winning the two opening rounds at Brands Hatch in April.The 2007 champion could be under pressure from reigning champion Jez Clarke, who has stepped up to Class One this season. A self-confessed fan of the Cadwell circuit, Clarke was a winner here in his single-seater days, but Class One is packed with potential race winners so watch out for drivers such as Mark Sumpter, Kevin Harrison, Pete Morris and Marcus Carniel.

All joining us from north of the border is the Yokohama Scottish Classic Sports & Saloons. After four rounds Stan Bernard leads the way in his Porsche 911 with ‘rainmeister’ Olly Ross just eight points behind aboard his 1600cc Lotus Europa
