MARTIN HADWEN 1947- 2010

CATEGORIES:

It was with great sadness that the Club learned at the weekend that Martin Hadwen passed away on Friday 29th October, aged 63. As the founder of the National Motor Racing Archive, Martin has left a remarkable legacy for the future of motor sport.

A BRSCC member for many years Martin was a lifetime motor sport enthusiast who combined his love of the sport with a career in the shipping industry.

In 1987 he created the Archive, initially using his own collection and then steadily gathering more and more information about the history of the sport, including taking over the records of the BRSCC. Ultimately, he created an unrivalled collection of documents, books, photographs, film and memorabilia. All of this was kept at his Norfolk home and was made available to anyone wanting information.

Martin retired from work three and a half years ago and was able to devote even more time to the Archive, but sadly was struck by cancer and fought a long and brave battle against illness.

The work of the Archive has now been taken over by MotorSport Vision and will now be based at Snetterton, Martin's home track.

Everything that Martin did was carried out with enthusiasm and diligence and with his trademark sense of humour. Martin leaves his wife Sally and two sons and the BRSCC sends sincere condolences for the loss of an unsung supporter of the sport.

His funeral will be held on Thursday 11 November at The Earlham Crematorium, Earlham Road, Norwich, NR2 3RG at 3pm. Martin's family has decided that there are to be no flowers at the funeral but donations in his memory may be made to the Motorsport Safety Fund.
