NEIL BENFIELD MEMORIAL SPRINT

CATEGORIES:

Following our joint sortie with the CSCC last month, the next outing for the BRSCC South Eastern Centre saw us co-operate with two other local clubs, BARC SE and Borough 19 for a rarity among the BRSCC’s events portfolio – a sprint, and at the one mile circuit at Lydden Hill to boot. Glorious weather blessed the event on Saturday 30th May.

Competitors were chasing a range of club and marque championships, including the ASEMC, AEMC, BARC SE, TVR Speed and the Metro Caterham Academy, under the watchful eye of co-ordinator Kim Denning. Caterhams dominated the entry, with a range of sports, saloons and single-seaters also in the entry, including the pocket-rocket Jedi 600 of one-time BRSCC series co-ordinator Chris Judge.

Competition proper consisted of three timed runs of 1.75 laps from a standing start, getting under way as soon as Practice was completed, once again competitors completing runs in class order. Failure to do so could result in times being disallowed. Furthermore, competitors reported for cutting corners, crossing kerbs or opening corners by using run‐off areas or other driving misdemeanours would have time penalties added or their times disallowed.

First in Class B1 was Bruce Aitken in his Citroen AX GT, with a best time of 92.01s, with Class B2 honours going to Matt Carter, who pedalled his Honda 2000 around the track in 86.62s. The more closely-fought Class B3 went the way of Derek Jones BMW M Coupe, in a 88.08s.

TVR runners were split into two classes, with BA1 being picked up by Mike Roe’s Vixen S4, topping the timesheets with a 90.86s, and the closely-fought BA2 going to Dave Morris’s Tuscan on 81.86s. Class C6 was an all Lotus affair, the 86.64s recorded by Stephen Laing’s Exige earning top spot.

. Among the massed ranks of the Caterhams, Adam Pine emerged victorious in CA1 with a best of 87.40s, and CA2 went to Jeremy Webb in 87.26. Class D8 saw victory for Roger Burgess’s Ford Escort in 84.45s. Classes G11 and G12 were likely to see the eventual FTD winner, and so it proved. Although Clive Wooster won the former with a 78.06s in his Radical SR4, it was not enough to beat Jonathan Gibbs 75.59 in his Reynard. Wooster had the consolation of being best BARC SE runner.

Chief Marshal Anne Rothberg reports that the Caterhams had a great day, with Academy co-ordinator Kim Denning sending her thanks and compliments on the organisation. Things ran so smoothly that proceedings were over by 15.30. Our thanks go to our fellow motorsport enthusiasts in Borough 19 and BARC SE, as well those at HQ who fostered the co-operation.

The next BRSCC South Eastern Centre race meeting is at Brands Hatch on June 13-14 for the BRSCC Clubmans Raceday and Fun Cup.
