News 2016 SEASON REVIEW - BRSCC ALFA ROMEO CHAMPIONSHIP
The arrival of a new season’s calendar is always eagerly anticipated and 2016 was no exception for the BRSCC Alfa Romeo Championship as a non UK meeting had been widely canvassed. This was finally confirmed as Zolder in June, the first time we had been abroad since visiting Croix-en-Ternois over ten years ago. Another highlight was to be a return to Castle Combe in July and Motor Sport Vision’s “Festival Italia” in the middle of August. A major change for 2016 was a switch to Yokohama tyres, supplied by “Black’n’Rounds” at Silverstone.

Supersport is the ultimate evolution of the Academy car and like Tracksport beneath it, many drivers also benefit from the convenience of professional team support. The majority of Supersport drivers are now in their fourth year of Caterham racing making them amongst the most experienced and competitive there is.

2016 was an historic season: for only the second time in the club's history a female driver had won one of its classes, as Linda Warren took the Class C 924 crown; at the same time Rick Styrin became the first person to take the Class A Boxster title three times.

The Plum Pudding Races that take place every year on Boxing Day at Mallory Park have become a great tradition for all those involved in club motorsport. Now entering its 42nd edition, the BRSCC is proud to become part of that tradition with the Club’s involvement in organising both the Saloon Car and Sports Car races.

The second stage of evolution from the Academy car, the progressing Academy drivers are joined by more experienced racers coming into Caterhams at this level, making it a fiercely fought championship. Unlike the lower categories, there is no restriction on professional team support or driver experience.

With 3 different winners from the opening 3 Brands Hatch Indy races of the 2016 BMW Racedays BMW Compact Cup Championship, our first meeting of the year certainly set the tone for what was to become the closest and most competitive championship since the BMW Compact Cup series was introduced to the UK race scene. Who could have imagined then that the Championship wouldn’t be decided until the last corner of the last lap of the last race of the season...however that’s exactly what happened, and what a nail biting and spectacular season it was!

The Roadsport championship is the next step on the Caterham ladder for Academy drivers & cars from 2015. With light modifications and a change to track orientated tyres, this enables them to enjoy another year of racing with the friends they have battled against in the hugely successful Academy series. 2016’s Roadsport grid was comprised of a combination of drivers from the two 2015 Academy groups, joined by novice drivers entering, or rejoining Caterham racing.

The season started at Oulton park and hot favourite for XR2 Championship honours was Mike Heath who took two outright wins, one in the wet and one in the dry, Justin Roberts also showed promise with two good 3rd place finishes. The next round at Oulton the tables were turned and it was Greg Speight who took two outright victories in his newly acquired Ex Craig Brookfield championship winning XR2 with his rival Mike Heath only managing two 3rd places finishes, with Ralph Fernihough keeping Heath at bay to secure two 2nd place results.

The paddock one-upmanship between the Green and White groups meant that if the Green group was going to be close, then the White group was going to be closer. Given that there was only one point between three drivers, the White group needed something special to make their finale count and they did not disappoint.

The Avon Tyres National Post '89 Formula Ford 1600 Championship boomed in 2016 after it was nominated as a feeder series for the Mazda Road to Indy programme which meant whoever won the title was eligible to take part in the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on 6th & 7th December. Up for grabs was funding to facilitate the winner’s participation in the 2017 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.

Competitors, families and friends of the BRSCC Alfa Romeo Championship gathered at The Brandon Hall Hotel, near Coventry, on Saturday November 12 to cheer on this year’s trophy winners. At the top of the list was our youngest ever Champion, Tom Hill, who took his Bianco Auto Developments prepared 156 to 9 wins from 16 starts, only being off the Twin Spark podium on two occasions.

The BRSCC South Eastern Centre's third and final race meeting of the season took place over the weekend of October 22-23, namely the Formula Ford Festival, run in conjunction with BRSCC HQ, featuring a 21-race programme, as usual over Brands Hatch's 1.208 mile Indy Circuit. Saturday dawned foggy, with a spectacular sunrise, with the rest of the day mostly cloudy but thankfully dry. Sunday’s early morning fog cleared to reveal a glorious sun which lasted throughout, albeit with an autumnal nip in the air.

Yet here we are back in mid-October with the last races of the year all set to play out before us. There’s still titles to decide and bragging rights to earn, so now is the time to both reflect and celebrate another fantastic year of club racing.

On a busy weekend for our BRSCC Midlands who are on double duty, the International circuit and the Wing complex plays host to our perennial Finals Weekend where scores are settled and champions are crowned – and as it happened, every single series that’s here this weekend is yet to be decided.

Mallory Park in Leicestershire played host to a spectacular one day meeting courtesy of our Midlands Centre, where the weather and the racing on display was varied. Nevertheless despite the wet conditions at times, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the competitors out on track across the day.

We had four drivers who scored a hat-trick of victories when the BRSCC’s North Western Centre organised a weekend of racing at Anglesey on 24th/25th September. The real heroes, however, were the marshals who continued to provide safety cover when a storm generated horrendous weather conditions on Saturday. Fortunately, the sun made an appearance on Sunday making life much better for all.

As we transition from summer into autumn, we’re making a run towards the end of the season. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t still squeeze a couple more visits to the coast when it comes to motorsport. We’re back once again to the wonderfully picturesque setting of Anglesey, nestled beside the Irish Sea in North Wales for a 2-day meeting with the BRSCC’s North Western Centre. In some ways, it’s almost an ode to Ford – almost in the sense that Saturday’s main event features something that isn’t part of the Blue Oval family, but is just as exciting.

Our 2-day race meeting at Rockingham Motor Speedway may have been the last circuit racing that the venue will hold for 2016, but the racing made sure that it went out with plenty of noise and action to remember it by. On a gloriously sunny late Summer day the BRSCC’s North Western Centre laid on a thrilling meeting at Oulton Park on 17th September in which two young men called Matt avoided slip-ups to record notable victories on a day when 4 of the club’s Championships enjoyed Double Headers and the MG Car Club’s Cockshoot Cup also made a guest appearance.

It’s our 3rd and final visit of the season to the amphitheatre that is the Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, which plays host to a mix of saloons and sportscar as well as the now unique sight of some oval racing thrown in for good measure. Sandy Mitchell and Ciaran Haggerty scored theirs and Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse’s second British GT4 Championship victory in three races at Donington Park earlier today, while Graham Johnson and Mike Robinson wrapped up the class title by finishing third aboard their PMW Expo Racing/Optimum Motorsport Ginetta.

Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse’s Alasdair McCaig and Rob Bell ended their British GT Championship campaign on a high by winning the two-hour season finale at Donington Park this afternoon. However, it was TF Sport’s Derek Johnston and Jonny Adam who celebrated hardest after claiming the GT3 drivers’ and teams’ crowns.

A dry weekend helped to make sure racing was competitive as ever for the BRSCC Northern Centre’s one and only meeting at the fantastic Croft circuit in North Yorkshire. A timetable almost completely awash with Caterhams also saw Formula Fords, Hondas and various sports and saloon cars interspersed throughout. That said, while one championship finished for the year, three more were settled with races still to go.

An entry list packing 29 cars will provide a fitting spectacle around Leicestershire’s 12-turn, 2.498-mile former GP venue where all eyes will be on who can finally snare this year’s titles. Now the third driver to join our ranks from Classic Stock Hatch, Ryan Lowry landed a pair of first place 924 Class trophies with wins in two of our three races at Donington this weekend. In the Boxsters, Alex Stocker, Andy Hack, Angus Archer and Ed Hayes all returned to our ranks having missed recent rounds, along with Gerrards Cross-based Garry Goodwin, who put in personal best performances.

It’s safe to say that over the two days at the BRSCC Midlands Centre run meeting at Silverstone this past weekend, the circuit and the competitors had to deal with their fair share of rain and wet weather conditions. But despite a sodden circuit, it certainly didn’t dampen the competitors’ spirits nor the action across 13 enthralling races.

The Romanian claimed his fifth win of the season, recovering from a difficult qualifying and showing the steely determination which has made him a formidable competitor in 2016.

Following the announcement that the GT3 will not be competing at Snetterton, further update about the team and other changes have now come to light. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond his control Jordan Albert has decided to retire early from the season, leaving British GT and Beechdean AMR.

Beechdean AMR had a difficult weekend at Spa Francorchamps on the 8th and 9th of July, with the GT3 retiring after a collision with a European GT4 car in the early stages of the race. The crash which took place during the first lap caused significant damage to the car.

Castle Combe is one of those circuits that when you look the circuit map, you may not think much of it. However, you’d be foolish to underestimate it. It still commands a reputation as one of the UK’s most challenging and gruelling race tracks to tackle. This weekend, the circuit plays host to a race meeting packed with content and given how popular meetings held there can be, an impressive crowd is set to turn out in force to witness it all unfold.

The F4 British Championship once again played a starring role alongside Formula 1; on this occasion during the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone. JHR Developments driver Jack Butel’s Ford EcoBoost-powered racer was on display at the Silverstone Racing Club and unsurprisingly grabbed plenty of attention.

Snetterton has already produced two cracking race meetings so far this season, with our season opener back in April and our summer race weekend last month both bringing incredible action both in the wet and in glorious sunshine. It’s incredible to think, therefore, that on this occasion we visit Norfolk for the 3rd and final time in 2016.

Alex Reed, Joey Foster and Lanan Racing recorded their maiden British GT4 Championship victories at Spa-Francorchamps earlier today after a flawless performance aboard their Ginetta G55 helped them claim a 4.3s victory over PMW Expo Racing/Optimum Motorsport’s Graham Johnson and Mike Robinson.

Mark Farmer scored his maiden British GT Championship victory, and co-driver Jon Barnes his first in eight years, to claim a narrow win over Team Parker Racing’s Seb Morris and Rick Parfitt Jnr at Spa-Francorchamps earlier today.

The BRSCC South Eastern Centre's second race meeting of the season took place over the weekend of July 9-10, a 21-race programme, as usual over Brands Hatch's 1.208 mile Indy Circuit. Saturday dawned a little overcast, but brightened as the day wore on. Sunday started in a similar fashion, with rain briefly disrupting proceedings before clearing.

As one of the UK’s best loved circuits, there’s just something enigmatic about Brands Hatch every time competitors take to the track. It’s the echoes of racing greats and their past glories with those taking part wanting to emulate their racing heroes. There’s plenty of them here this weekend as we make our second visit to the BRSCC’s “local” venue for two days of motorsport full of variety and bursting with talented drivers.

This week will see a momentous occasion for two of our drivers that compete in both of our Mazda MX-5 championships, as Godalming’s Oliver Allwood (Mk1 MX-5 Championship) and County Durham’s Alan Henderson (Mk3 MX-5 SuperCup) will board a plane to Spain this week to attend the European MX-5 Cup Final at the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona in Montmelo.

After a morning of qualifying, the BRSCC’s North Western Centre entertained the crowd at Oulton Park with 12 fabulous club races on 25th June. Doug Crosbie was delighted to go home with a clean sweep of pole, race win and fastest lap in the Avon Tyres Northern Post89 Formula Ford 1600 Championship. This was the first time he had accomplished such a feat.

Following another great event at Silverstone in May, 4 weeks later and the VTEC Challenge rolled into Rockingham in Northamptonshire over the weekend of the 11th and 12th of June. Running on the “ISSC Long” layout, the assembled drivers set about readying themselves for the qualifying session.

The torrential weather this past weekend at Silverstone for the British GT centrepiece event did more than enough to catch drivers out, so much so that races were force to be abandoned due to the amount of rain and standing water. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only cause for concern after the racing stopped.

Aaron Mason and Rob Barrable emerged victorious from a weather-affected and Safety Car-interrupted Silverstone 500 race earlier today to claim RCIB Insurance Racing’s first British GT4 Championship win, as well as Ginetta’s fourth in five rounds, after starting 16th.

One of the biggest British GT Championship grids ever assembled prepares for take-off at Silverstone’s former bomber base this weekend as part of the series’ blue riband three-hour, 500-kilometre event. A 51-strong entry comprising GT3 and GT4 cars is set to do battle around the Grand Prix circuit on Sunday in what could prove a pivotal skirmish in both of this year’s title races thanks to a maximum 37.5 points being on offer to the victors.

Usually around this time of the year, many start to think about heading off on their summer holidays. However, when you’re a racing driver it’s usually tricky to leave the race track behind, especially when you’re in the middle of a championship battle. The BRSCC is saddened to hear of the passing of former racing driver and Club member Neil Cunningham following his battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Neil was seen by many as one of the nicest and most genuine figures in motorsport throughout his 27 year career and beyond.

As Formula E grows in popularity and raises the profile of electric vehicle racing, the need for entry-level electric race cars has become more evident. Back in 2014 Dallara Automobili (one of the worlds’ largest manufacturers of racing cars) approached Oxford Brookes University (OBU) with the idea of developing an affordable electric racing vehicle. Thus began the Formula Club-E Development Program.

The BRSCC North Western Centre’s second meeting on the weekend of 7th/8th May took place over two days at the fabulous Anglesey Circuit which, apart from rain early on Sunday morning, was bathed in glorious sunshine throughout as an action packed 18 race schedule for Mazdas and Caterhams was played out.

When you think of Anglesey, some may view it as a beautiful island in the north of Wales, located right on the coast. A location that’s exceptional for tourists and provides some of the most incredible scenery imaginable. That’s probably how the average tourist would describe it. To a motorsport fan, it’s more than that – it’s a challenging circuit planted beside the Irish Sea in what is quite possibly the most beautiful sporting location in all of British motorsport.

With four different winners in the opening six races, the F4 British Championship certified by FIA - powered by Ford season has got away to an ultra-competitive start full of excitement. The action rolls onto Thruxton this weekend with Carlin’s Max Fewtrell riding high following a brace of podiums and maiden victory at Donington Park which saw him wrestle top spot in the standings away from team-mate and double race winner Petru Florescu.

Derek Johnston and Jonny Adam began their 2016 British GT campaign with victory in this afternoon’s Brands Hatch season opener. The TF Sport Aston Martin pair were joined in the top-three by the pole-sitting Team Parker Racing Bentley of Rick Parfitt Jnr and Seb Morris, as well as Liam Griffin and Fabio Babini’s Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini, which was promoted to third post-race.

Battle is ready to recommence in Ford MSA Formula this weekend at Donington Park (16/17 April) after a thrilling opening three rounds of 2016. Carlin’s Max Fewtrell and James Pull are looking to build on their strong starts to the season at a circuit where they have both excelled; Fewtrell having claimed top honours in pre-season testing and Pull collecting a brace of podiums last season.

The second collective Ford MSA Formula test of the season at Donington Park was a thrilling tale of two halves. Jamie Caroline lit up the timing screens throughout the morning; whilst Messrs Quinn, Goddard and Fewtrell stole the plaudits in the afternoon. The latter storming his way to the quickest time of the test.

Snetterton in Norfolk garnered the motorsport world’s attention today as the British GT Championship ran its annual Media Day to help kick off the countdown to the 2016 season, with the majority of the major teams in both GT3 & GT4 in attendance.

Australian Zane Goddard is all set to race in Ford MSA Formula for Double R this season. The 16 year-old already has experience of car racing, having competed in the FIA Australian Formula 4 series in 2015. He finished ninth in the standings and collected a podium finish at Phillip Island along the way.

2015 was a season of fast class racing for the Excool OSS Championship with 13 lap records set across all five of the contested championship classes, with at least one record at every meeting and every circuit visited. Over 20 different types of sports cars turned out during the year emphasising the “Open” regulations and how much it was about the engineers and mechanics as well as the drivers.

Caterham’s premier championship has firmly established itself as one of the most competitive and exciting race series in the country. Last year saw the first major change for the series since its inception in 2009. Gone was Caterham’s own 6 speed manual gearbox and in its place came a sequential ‘box from French manufacturer Sadev.
