PAUL PARKIN GETS HIS GPDA TROPHY
Paul Parkin, the 2011 winner of the GPDA Monty Terrell Trophy, finally got his hands on the much-coveted award during a break in proceedings at the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy meeting at Silverstone on Saturday 25th February, albeit some three weeks late!
The GPDA Trophy is awarded to the best Flag Marshal of the year as nominated by the BRSCC Centres, and is usually presented at the BRSCC Awards Dinner, which took place on Saturday 4th February. However, true to form Paul couldn’t attend the awards dinner as he was marshalling at two rallies over that weekend so the BRSCC Midland Centre Chief Marshal, Roy Salsbury, collected the trophy on Paul’s behalf.
Roy was the man who nominated Paul for the award and finally presented it to him at Silverstone. Roy also had some very positive things to say about the award winner. “Paul has been marshalling for a fairly short time, but in that period he has shown a great improvement in everything he does. Last year he marshalled well over 40 days mainly at the Midland Centre’s four main circuits of Silverstone, Donington, Mallory and Rockingham but has also marshalled at various sprints, rallies and karting events, including a trip to another BRSCC event at Anglesey.
He was awarded this trophy for his hard work at his newfound skill of flagging and I believe he has great potential to be amongst the best in the business. Paul has made friends throughout the marshalling world and I have never heard a bad word said about him. He is very keen to continue learning his trade and has volunteered for all of our events this year.”
The GPDA Trophy dates from the early 70's and is now named after Monty Terrell, who was the BRSCC's Chief Flag Marshal in that period and won the award in 1976.
