Dave Williams reports on the support races from the Caterham Festival at Donington Park over the weekend. Tomorrow, Donna Kelly will review all of the Caterham action.

There is an old motor sport saying that the first win is the hardest to accomplish and the second usually follows quite quickly. Skylar Robinson lived up to this maxim at the BRSCC’s Midland Centre meeting at Donington Park where he scored his first ever car racing victory on Saturday and followed this up with a second on Sunday.

The 17 year old American was competing in the Post89 category in the Avon Tyres BRSCC FF1600 double header with points up for grabs in the Triple Crown, National and Northern Championships. To a certain extent win number one was handed to him. At the start of the penultimate lap he was running second behind his compatriot Austin Kimberly when third placed David McArthur suffered a broken brake cable and arrived at Redgate at full speed. He managed to avoid Robinson but ploughed into the back of Kimberley before ending up in the tyre wall. Kimberley rejoined to take the chequered flag in seventh.

Skylar’s drove splendidly on Sunday. With the exception of half a lap when Ben Norton got ahead Robinson led throughout despite being under constant pressure from a string of cars that were jostling in his mirrors. With Norton succumbing to mechanical problems Kimberley battled up from seventh on the grid to take the runner-up spot.

In the Pre90 class Jamie Jardine came very close to also doing the double. He was leading the first encounter until he was delayed on the final lap by backmarkers. In a flash Chris Hodgen nipped through to snatch away the laurels. Low oil pressure thwarted Hodgen’s challenge next time out and Jardine took the flag five and a half seconds in front.

Like Skylar Robinson in the Formula Fords, Matt Comber took his first Mazda MX5 SuperCup win on Saturday and then took his second on Sunday in what were both were hard fought affairs. Matt Davies boosted his points total with two podium finishes, second then third. Abbie Eaton made an impressive return to MX5 racing completing the podium in Saturday’s race. Veteran Paul Sheard left Donington still leading the championship having recovered from a disappointing fifth on Saturday to take second on Sunday.

BIGprofile sponsored a brace of Sports 2000 contests. Chris Snowdon was the pre-meeting favourite in the Pinto-powered class, and backed up that tag by taking pole and then finishing five seconds ahead of the dicing Mikes that were Mr Fry and Mr Johns. In the Duratec Championship, Patrick Sherrington took pole and got off to a great start opening-up a sizeable lead on Robert Oldershaw and Craig Mitchell. However, Oldershaw wasted no time in closing the gap and then took the lead on just the second lap. At the end of the 30 minutes Oldershaw had won comfortably, ahead of Mitchell, with Sherrington having to make do with third.
