THREE WAY FIGHT FOR ALFA TITLE

There have been several years when the outcome of the BRSCC Alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship title race has been decided at the final round. The battle has usually been between two drivers in different classes each with its own set of dynamics – maybe one Modified and one Production.

The final round of the 2010 Championship at Donington this Sunday is going to see something new – three drivers, all running in the same class in the same type of car. Mel Healey, Chris Healey and Andy Inman will all be driving Standard Production Class E 156s and only 4 points separates them with Mel on 195, Chris 194 and Andy 191. 22 points are available for a win and fastest laps in the race and qualifying, so there are plenty of mathematical possibilities! May the best driver win in a straightforward fight!

However, before the last round at Silverstone, part of the Britcar 24 Hours meeting, this was not the likely outcome. Chris Healey had a useful 16 point advantage over Mel with his Class C GTV. An incident in qualifying resulted in damage that was sufficient to rule the GTV out of that race and, subsequently, the Donington final. The replacement 156 he will be driving at the weekend is one that has won Class E this year in the hands of 2009 Champion Paul Plant. Chris does have 156 experience having successfully raced with one last year before switching to the GTV.

The outcome of the Championship is not the only story of interest likely to develop at Donington. This is the 2010 running of the Kevin Griffiths Trophy and should see a repeat of the absorbing Silverstone battle between Tim Lewis (Alfasud Sprint) and Neil Smith but if they should run into problems there are plenty of drivers who would be happy to have their names on the trophy, not least Steve Dymoke (156) and previous winner, Andy Page with his venerable Giulietta Turbo. As at Silverstone, we shall also be welcoming a group of Fiat Punto Abarths over from Ireland.

Later in the day there will also be some end of season fun in which Alfas and Fiats will face competitors from the VW Cup in an Italy versus Germany race.
