TITLE UP FOR GRABS AT ANGLESEY

The Avon Tyres backed Caterham Roadsport & Supersport championships are unexpected but welcome visitors this weekend to Anglesey, where the BRSCC North Western Centre will hold their fifth, but not final, meeting of the season on the island circuit.

The duo of Caterham championships were added to the two day, thirteen race timetable after the Donington rounds originally scheduled for August were cancelled due to planning problems with the local council.

The Supersport Championship is Caterham’s most popular series and just a single point separates Lee Wiggins and reigning Roadsport champion Jeremy Webb in their monumental battle for overall supremacy. Prior to the last round at Oulton Park, Kent based driver Webb firmly had the upper hand after a miserable weekend at Zandvoort in Holland for Stancombe Vehicle Engineering driver Wiggins. But at Oulton the tables were turned with an almost complete reversal of Dutch fortunes bringing the pair back together, handing the slim advantage to the Coachbuilder from Essex.

The picture in the Roadsport Championship is much clearer – Hertfordshire racer Wes Fox has continued to extend his championship lead throughout the year and has reached the critical point where he could secure the title this weekend with a brace of wins or even less, depending on his rivals’ results. Traditionally, the Roadsport championship has gone to right the wire making Fox’s dominance this year all the more impressive, but he has been significantly helped by the mad scramble for points behind him, with several combatants robbing valuable points off each other.

One driver arriving at Anglesey with an array of titles already in the bag is MedinaSport boss John Loebell who was crowned as the overall 2011 Northern Formula Ford Pre-90 champion at the last meeting at Oulton Park earlier this month. He has also already claimed the Pre-90 Champion of Oulton and the Class C crowns, and last time at Anglesey back in April; he set a new FF1600 Class C lap record for the Coastal Circuit. It is no surprise therefore that John will be the favourite to add the Pre-90 Star of Anglesey title to his honours list.

In the Post 89 class the title is as yet undecided but teenager Chris Middlehurst is very much in the driving seat; sensible race finishes this weekend will give him the title at the end of a very impressive debut season. Another leading driver in the category this year has been Liverpool’s John Murphy. John has already been crowned class B champion, and has a virtually unassailable lead for the Star of Anglesey title. The remaining championship to be decided is that for Class A, with Chris currently at the top of the table, but Jamie Jardine, Rob Smith and Martin Short are all still in the running.

The Formula Jedi title battle couldn’t be tighter as the championship arrives at Anglesey for rounds 11 & 12 this weekend. Richard Mitcham has had an astounding year so far but after a trying weekend at Rockingham last time out, now finds himself equal on points at the top of the table with ex Super One karter James Fletcher. At this point they remain the only race winners this year. However Chips Away driver Dan Cook, who is currently third in the standings, will be waiting in the wings if any of the top two run into trouble. Others to look out for this weekend, who could upset the form book are Dan Clowes, Mark Gellatly and Paul Butcher, along with Barry Armstrong whose consistency now sees him climb to fourth place in the points.

The S&G Response Ford XR Challenge is back at Anglesey for the third and final time this season. Leading Class A (Fiesta XR2) is Simon Sheridan who deposed previous leader Mark Robinson. Sheridan has 154 points over Robinson’s 151. Third placed Pete Lancaster is not far off on 130. The Class B field was headed by Anglesey race instructor John-Ifan Jones, but Jason Hennefer on 145 now bests the local man by a mere 4 points. Terry Kellaher shares 3rd with Danny Leigh on 119 points.
