About the National Formula Ford Championship

The National Formula Ford Championship represents the peak of Formula Ford single-seater racing in the UK, as drivers both young and experienced face off against once another in some of the most intense, competitive and exciting racing open-wheel racing you’ll find in British motorsport.

Formula Ford as a category of racing is steeped in history. All the way back in 1967, the formula was conceived out of necessity to allow more new drivers to make an entry into single seater racing without the ever-growing costs of racing in Formula Junior at the time. Since then, the original concept of a 1600cc Ford Kent engine in a purpose-built formula chassis has consistently proven to be a combination that has helped craft, develop and hone the skills of multiple champion drivers worldwide for over 50 years.

It’s widely accepted that racing in Formula Ford is one of, if not the best proving grounds for young talent to flourish. Many great names agree that there are lessons learned within Formula Ford that are hard or impossible to learn in any other form of circuit racing can set a developing driver up perfectly for the next stages of his career. With no aerodynamic aids, drivers quickly learn the fundamentals of mechanical grip, race car setup and racecraft, all valuable skills and abilities that are key to succeeding in motorsport.

National Formula Ford is split into two classes – the Pro Class is dedicated mainly for the fastest drivers on the grid and is usually populated by young drivers in the process of taking their first steps into competitive circuit racing out of the junior ranks or from karting. Other fast experienced hands will also regularly appear in this class, bringing a great mix of age and experience levels within. The Clubman Class is perfect for any driver wishing to race Formula Ford without the pressure and expectation that the Pro Class can bring. Many drivers here are true enthusiasts that enjoy their racing and therefore have a place on the grid to race against one another.

The championship typically visits several top circuits found across the length and breadth of the UK and British isles, with venues such as Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Donington Park and Oulton Park proving to be particular favourites among drivers and spectators. In addition, National Formula Ford also typically makes regular trips to other circuits such as Kirkistown in Northern Ireland, Knockhill in Scotland and Anglesey in Wales, proving that it truly is a national reaching championship across all four home nations.
