The youngest competitor in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup, 16-year-old Sam Morgan, has signed to return to the championship in 2014. The Bristol-based racer will contest the season with title-winning team KPM Racing, but has yet to decide what model of Volkswagen he will race.

“We are still discussing whether it should be a Scirocco or a Golf,” said motorsport student Sam. “At the moment we are looking towards the Golf GTI I raced at the final round this season, which we proved is just as fast, if not faster, than the Sciroccos.”

Morgan made his VW Cup debut at Snetterton in June, just 19 days after his 16th birthday, at the wheel of a Team HARD Golf. He went on to record a 12th-place finish at Brands Hatch before switching to Kevin Poole’s KPM squad for the final races, at Donington Park, in which he claimed an impressive sixth in the team’s Mk VI Golf.

“The KPM Golf was brilliant at Donington; it handled superbly and I enjoyed driving it and working with such a professional team,” added Morgan. “Kevin is very good and he knows the Golf well; he has the knowledge to help me push further in the VW Cup. I think the championship is a really good starting point for newcomers to racing. They welcome you really well, and it’s great experience. I am looking forward to next season immensely.”

Sam cut his racing teeth in karts at the age of seven, and went on to make his circuit racing debut in the SaxMax series in 2012, in which he scored a race win, championship third and the Rookie of the Year title. KPM Racing won the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup title in 2012 with James Walker, and the team’s Sciroccos claimed three race victories in 2013.

The APR Volkswagen Racing Cup, which enjoys the further backing of ECM, CEVA, Hankook, Paragon and Prestige Performance Centre, returns to action on Easter Monday, 21 April, at the Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire. The 2014 champion will win a funded drive in the final round of the fabulous Scirocco R Cup in Germany.
