Former bike racer Dave Fairbrother is to step up a gear this season, his second in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup. For 2013, Fairbrother has swapped his Golf GTI for a Scirocco to be prepared by Tony Gilham’s Team HARD, and has landed backing from Pall-Ex, the award-winning palletised freight network founded by TV entrepreneur Hilary Devey.

Fairbrother made his car-racing debut in 2012 in the VW Cup after several years competing on two wheels and then moving into race team management, and hopes his new car, team and sponsor will help him in his quest for top-10 finishes. “I like to think that I am better prepared for the start of this season,” said 47-year-old Fairbrother. “My target last year was to get into the top 10, and I achieved that towards the end of the season. Now I want to be a top-10 finisher on a regular basis and, if possible, break into the top five.”

Halifax-based David has bought the Scirocco and believes that Team HARD will help him deliver the results he wants: “Tony’s team prepares a good car and he has a strong line-up of young and experienced drivers, from whom I can learn.”

Thrilled that his Scirocco will be branded in the new Pall-Ex livery, David said: “I have been part of Hilary’s network ever since she started Pall-Ex, and I am delighted that her company is now joining forces with me in the world of motorsport.”

Added a spokesman for Pall-Ex: “Our business is all about collaboration and driving innovation, and the plan is, with David’s help, to raise awareness of our activities through motorsport. It is shaping up to be an exciting season.”

Additional backing for Fairbrother’s campaign comes from Doodson Broking Group, ADD Express LTD, north-west MAN truck dealership Steadplan and Fuchs Silkolene.
