Following its successful debut season with the Volkswagen Racing Cup, Britain’s most competitive and best-supported one-make saloon series, the US Volkswagen Group road-car and motorsport specialist APR is to return to the championship as title sponsor for the coming year.

The APR Volkswagen Racing Cup kicks off on Easter Monday (1 April) at Oulton Park, and the field gathering to contest the championship looks the strongest in the 14-year history of the series. APR vice-president Keith Lucas cannot wait for the start lights: “The 2012 season was a fantastic introduction for us to European motorsport, and there is every sign that the coming year will be even better. We joined forces with the Volkswagen Racing Cup at the same time that we launched here, and it has provided us with invaluable experience. I think the competitors have benefited from our know-how also.”

Alabama-based APR, one of the biggest names in the world of Porsche, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen aftermarket performance products, has its European headquarters in Milton Keynes, alongside those of Volkswagen Racing UK, and is not only the championship’s title sponsor but also a valuable technical partner.

Sam Roach of Volkswagen Racing UK said: “APR’s experience of Volkswagen engine development has proved a considerable advantage for our competitors and having back-up from such a knowledgeable technical partner has been invaluable. We are delighted to have APR back on board for 2013.”

APR’s motorsport programme blasts into action this weekend (26/27 Jan) at Daytona, Florida, with the Rolex 24 Hours. Last year APR made history by introducing Audi to the USA’s most famous endurance race; this year APR returns with two Audi R8s in the GT category, one for US/Canada crew Matt Bell, David Empringham, John Farano, Alex Figge and Dave Lacey, and another for American driver Ian Baas and his German team-mates Marc Basseng, Frank Stippler and Rene Rast.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup was established in the UK in 2000 and is entering its 14th season as the sole saloon-racing supporting event to British GT. This year the championship will also race again at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium as a supporting event to the 25-hour Fun Cup.
