The battle for top honours in this year’s APR Volkswagen Racing Cup will be even more keenly contested with the news announced on Monday that one of the championship’s stars will win the chance to compete on a world stage.
The driver on top of the points following mid-August’s penultimate round of the 2013 UK Volkswagen series will win a fully funded outing in the final round of the fabulous Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup. He or she will race at the German Grand Prix circuit of Hockenheim in front of a massive crowd gathered for the DTM German touring car series.
Announcing the prize, which has been generously awarded by Volkswagen Motorsport in Germany, Sam Roach of Volkswagen Racing UK said: “The Scirocco R-Cup is one of the leading single-make race series in the world and it is a great honour that Volkswagen Motorsport is offering this prize to us.
“Because their final race is a few weeks before ours, it means that whoever leads the championship after the Brands Hatch rounds of the VW Cup will win the prize drive – it will make the end-of-season battle all the more interesting, I think.” The winner will receive not only a funded drive in the Hockenheim round of the Scirocco R-Cup but also hotel accommodation and hospitality at the track.
James Walker, the 2012 APR Volkswagen Racing Cup Champion, experienced the Scirocco R-Cup for himself this season. “It was awesome. The way the championship is run out there is mind-boggling: it’s a proper show, and the car is great to drive. It’s a fantastic prize,” he said.
The Scirocco R-Cup is a popular regular support to the German touring car series and in addition to competitive amateur drivers from around Europe the series regularly attracts ‘legends’ from F1 and other international motorsport. The championship’s 2.0-litre turbocharged Scirocco Rs are powered by eco-friendly compressed natural gas and feature DSG semi-automatic gearboxes.
The APR Volkswagen Racing Cup this season features 14 races spread over seven events, six of which are at UK circuits supporting British GT and one at the Belgian Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. The series enjoys additional support from Ceva, ECM, Eibach, Hankook, Milltek Sport and Paragon.
A brand new Scirocco which will contest this season’s APR Volkswagen Racing Cup is one of the highlights of the Volkswagen Racing stand at the Autosport International show at Birmingham’s NEC this week.
The SlideSports-prepared Scirocco will get its public unveiling on stand number 2552, where it will be displayed alongside an APR-tuned supercharged Audi R8. Volkswagen Racing and championship personnel will be on hand throughout the show to provide information and assistance for prospective competitors.
