When the economy takes a downturn the knock-on effect is usually keenly felt within club level motorsport. Regular competitors are left with difficult choices as to where and how they spend their disposable income – if they have any! The budget required to go motor racing for a season cannot always be on top of the list, particularly for family men who have many other calls on their income.
Therefore, taking the general financial situation into account, it is all the more remarkable that so many championships run by the BRSCC appear to be bucking the perceived trend. One that certainly fits into this category is the long running BRSCC Formula Jedi Championship.
Formula Jedi provides fast, exciting racing in a one make ‘slicks and wings’ single seater championship. Powered by 1000cc superbike engines these cars go from 0-60mph in 3 seconds and can reach 150mph which makes it one of the fastest and most competitive club single seater racing cars in the UK.
Frazer Corbyn is a long standing Jedi competitor and runs Jedi Racing Cars together with his father John. Frazer is convinced that Jedi’s ‘pound per mile an hour’ ratio is the key to its success. “I believe that we have got the price range of the package right. It is affordable but still delivers a very quick car that is exciting to drive. The evidence of this is the number of drivers that stay with the championship. Together with the new drivers we’ve attracted this year we’ve achieved regular grids in the 20’s which is well up on last year,” Frazer said.
Frazer is confident that the championship will continue to thrive for the remaing rounds this season and on into next year. ”We have quite a few interested drivers who have booked test drives with a view to competing in 2011 so overall we are very positive about the future” he added.
