British Touring Car Championship frontrunner Steven Kane is to join the Avon Tyres British GT grid at Silverstone this weekend. He will partner Iain Dockerill in a Ferrari 430 Scuderia prepared by the Chad Racing team, and says he wants to use the experience as a launchpad to Le Mans.

Kane says the aim is to help Chad back into the winner’s enclosure. “I drove the Scuderia for the first time at Spa a few weeks ago in a Belgian GT round,” said the 30-year-old Ulsterman, “and we took third from near the back of the grid. The aim is to help Iain to get a bit more experience. He is enjoying driving the Ferrari and he’s really taken to driving it like a duck to water. I’m there to help him and to try to get a result for the team. GTs is definitely an option for me in the future: I’d love to do Le Mans at some point in my career. British GT is a great place to start and to learn the craft.”

The Kane/Dockerill Scuderia will join the sister cars of Paul Warren/Tom Ferrier and Dan Brown/Chris Hyman for the BRSCC organised Silverstone race, the first of the British GT season’s two-hour endurance rounds. A bumper grid of GT3 and G4 class cars is gathering for the event on the ‘Bridge’ Grand Prix track layout.

Chad team manager Piers Masarati is hopeful for a strong result: “We’ve had quite a bit of success in Belgium and in European GT3 racing generally, and we’re looking for a little of that magic to rub off on our British GT campaign. One of our cars was on pole for one of the FIA GT3 races at Brno and took fastest lap, and we made the podium at Jarama, and at Spa in Belgian GTs.

“Iain prefers the longer distance races and Steven is an accomplished driver, so they have a good chance, even though the Ferraris face a tough challenge from some of the other lighter-on-fuel machinery. Steven is an immensely capable driver and we are hopeful he will drive with us full time in British GT in 2011, and in the European GT2 endurance series if a suitable co-driver can be found.”

A total of six Scuderias are expected at Silverstone; joining the three Chad cars will be the Ferraris of Duncan Cameron/Matt Griffin (MTECH), Hector Lester/Allan Simonsen (Rosso Verde) and Phil Burton/Adam Wilcox (Predator).
