John Murphy made the perfect start to the season winning both Formula Ford 1600 races in his Van Diemen RF90 at yesterday’s cold but bright season opener at Anglesey.

The Liverpuddlian topped the first Formula Ford qualifying session before going on to take the win from Martin Short and Jamie Jardine. Murphy repeated the trick after lunch heading the qualifying and then winning, this time from Douglas Crosbie with Martin Short dropping down to third. The brace of wins gives Murphy an early lead in the Star of Anglesey standings.

Murphy wasn’t the only double winner. Rob Spencer from Leicester also won both Sports & Saloon races having topped the listing in both qualifying sessions at the wheel of a Stuart Taylor Locosaki. Cam Forbes and Doug Carter filled the remaining podium places in the first outing and reversed positions in the second race.

The 45 minute Enduro race was won by Charles Fogg and Marcus Carniel with their Lola T592 coming home almost a minute ahead of Tim Mashman’s Caterham Supersport. The husband and wife pairing of Simon & Amanda Hadfield took third in a Lotus 23.
