This year’s APR Volkswagen Racing Cup Champion is to get the prize drive of a lifetime – a fully funded outing in the final round of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup at Hockenheim in Germany.

Announcing the prize, which has been generously awarded by Volkswagen Motorsport in Germany, Sam Roach of Volkswagen Racing UK said: “We couldn’t be more pleased and excited that our champion is going to be racing in this super-competitive series in front of a vast crowd on a Grand Prix circuit in Germany. It’s a great honour for the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup and a superb opportunity for our champion.”

The winner will receive accommodation and hospitality at the track, in addition to the prize drive at the final DTM meeting of the season in late October.

“We joined our German colleagues at Brands Hatch earlier this year for the DTM event, and I know that they were impressed by the standard of the Volkswagen Racing Cup cars and competitors,” added Roach. “They are very supportive of what we do in Britain and this is a great way they have chosen to express that support.

“It will make the closing rounds of the championship all the more exciting – there are several drivers who will have their eyes on the prize.”

James Walker, a Scirocco driver himself, leads the standings with six races remaining, ahead of Golf GTI pilots Mike Neuhoff, Tom Wilson and Aaron Mason.

The Scirocco R-Cup is a popular regular support to the German touring car series and in addition to competitive amateur drivers from around Europe the series regularly attracts ‘legends’ from motorsport history. Former F1 stars Damon Hill, Martin Donnelly, Pedro Lamy and Christian Danner are among those to have competed this year.

The championship’s 2.0-litre turbocharged Scirocco Rs are powered by eco-friendly compressed natural gas and feature DSG semi-automatic gearboxes.
