Former motocross racer Stewart Lines is planning a busy season of four-wheeled motorsport for 2012, combining a full season in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup with Mini Challenge events.

Stewart, 48 and from Sutton Coldfield, sampled Volkswagen racing for the first time at Donington Park and Silverstone at the end of last season, collected a brace of sixth-place finishes and was sufficiently impressed that he bought an ex-Aaron Mason Golf GTI with which to contest a full season.

“My objective was to learn about the cars and the championship,” said telecomms company managing director Lines, “and having done that I am now looking forward to a competitive season. I will be racing my Mini regularly also and I am hoping that the more time I get on track that the more competitive I will be. I’ll be disappointed if I finish outside the top six in the VWs and am hoping for a podium at least at every circuit we visit.”

Lines’ Golf will be prepared by AWM, for whom Mason won four races in 2011. Backing for Stewart’s track attack comes from telecomms hosting company Wavenet, and from Maximum Networks, Mitel and NEC.

After success at Grand Prix and European championship level in motocross, Lines switched to cars in 2007 and has sampled Clio racing and the SEAT Cupra series in addition to his race-winning exploits in Minis.

His entry will be part of a three-Golf campaign from AWM, with Lines and Mason joined on track by racing novice Simon Tomlinson.

The APR Volkswagen Racing Cup was established in the UK in 2000 and is entering its 13th season as the sole saloon-racing supporting event to British GT and British F3. This year the championship will also race at Brands Hatch alongside the German touring car championship and at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium as a supporting event to the 25-hour Fun Cup.
