The longest-serving competitor in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup, Peter Wyhinny, is to return to the championship again this year for a 12th consecutive season of competition.
Peter, who has just taken up a new post as managing director of SEAT Italy, will commute from his base in Verona to race the 2-litre turbocharged SEAT Leon Cupra in which he has competed since 2010.
“Although I am now working in Italy I am keen to carry on racing in the UK,” said 56-year-old Wyhinny, “and I am looking forward to another season in the Leon. We have made a few tweaks to the SEAT to improve straightline speed and hopefully we will be able to take the fight to all the new Sciroccos on the grid.” He first raced in the VW Cup in the original Caddy van in 2002.
Added Peter: “I have all the dates in my diary and will be able to fit them in, but testing may be a problem – fortunately my son, Paul, can deputise as he knows how I like the car set up.”
Wyhinny, who was christened Gianpiero by his Italian mother, has another important date in his diary for the weekend before the opening VW Cup rounds at Oulton Park – his first visit to Italy’s motorsport mecca, the circuit of Monza. “I am excited to be seeing it and I look forward to the day that I will race there. as it’s on the Italian SEAT Ibiza Cupra Cup calendar.”
The Leon is being prepared for competition by KPM, and will feature a fresh yellow livery and the “Enjoyneering” SEAT tag line.
