NATIONAL MOTORSPORT WEEK STARTS AT ANGLESEY

The start of National Motorsport Week coincides with the BRSCC North Western Centre meeting at Anglesey, which is dominated by the FunCup. Fourteen years since its conception in mainland Europe and ten years on from its first ever race in the UK, Europe’s leading endurance race Championship brings its unique class of racing to the island for rounds four & five of the 2011 season. This weekend’s racing promises to be action packed and truly exciting for all teams competing, with all drivers battling for top honours, as FunCup has been granted Championship status for 2011.

Supporting FunCup, and also from the JPR Motorsport stable, is the Saker Challenge. The Saker has an outstanding appearance and is a pure racer, which uses a strong-space frame chassis with a GRP sectional bodywork, including gull-wing doors and runs on Avon slicks. Robust, a real racing car, appealing and reliable…this is what Saker is all about. The Saker is an amazing spectacle which boasts a mid mounted 2 litre, turbo charged boxer engine and is restricted to 270 BHP. The truly slick power house is a commanding, yet ultra reliable machine, built for thrilling, affordable GT endurance racing.

Completing the eleven race schedule are triple headers for two Irish championships, who are joining us from across the water. There will be three fifteen minute races for the Irish Ginetta Junior Championship and the same for the HRCA.

The HRCA has run Historic Racing championships in Ireland since 1984 and caters for almost any pre 1979 race car with a variety of classes which in turn are split by group to ensure everyone is competitive. Series Co-ordinator Alan Kessie’s ASK Racing Gryphon C73 Clubmans car has been the pace of the class in 2011 but he has some new competition this weekend as Dave Kelly brings his Crossle 9S-BMW out and Stephen Doyle also makes a return to the class in his glorious sounding Lola T212.

In their wake, Bernard Foley’s rumbling BGT V8 will be hoping to stay ahead of Clive Brandon’s Lotus 47 and Tommy Doherty’s ASK Porsche 924 Turbo. Don’t miss the midfield battles either and bring yourself back to the seventies as the Modsport Midgets and Minis take on an influx of UK based Imps, led by expat Col Rooney. Watch out for the steel bodied Midgets also, as they tend to have fraught battles and are always very closely matched.

To get specators involved in National Motorsport Week, the North Western Centre will be offering a limited number of fans a ‘behind the scenes tour’ of Race Control and a ride around the Anglesey circuit, which should give them an interesting insight into how a race meeting is run.
