NORTHERN & SUPER CLASSIC FORMULA FORD MAKES SECOND VISIT TO MALLORY PARK
Just three weeks after the first visit of the season to kick off the opening rounds of the 2021 campaign, the Avon Tyres Northern & Super Classic Formula Ford Championship returns to Mallory Park for the second time on the calendar to contest the next two races of the year. With another portion of the £2,000 prize money pot and another Mallory Park test day voucher up for grabs via random draw, there’s sure to be more incredible competition.
Across the five classes, two of the current points leaders are back in action on Saturday, but we’ll cover them throughout our preview when analysing each of the classes. At those opening rounds, Formula Ford Festival winner Joey Foster took a double from Jack Wolfenden and Ben Tinkler in both races overall and in Class P for the most modern machinery, while other class wins were spread between Chris Hodgen, “Juiceie Bruceie”, Jordan Harrison and Simon Hadfield. For the P Class, the sole representative will be Nigel Dolan, who finished 4th both times behind the aforementioned top 3 and will use this as a prime opportunity to steal points away from those not in attendance.
The class with the largest number of cars is Super Classic A for cars aged between 1990 to 1998. Six drivers are ready to do battle here with Chris Hodgen the leader after his double class win at the beginning of the month. His car is one of no less than four Swift chassis on the grid this time, as he’s joined by chassis mates Paul Mason, George McDonald and Paul Tucker. Hodgen and Mason will race in their 1994 examples, while Tucker and McDonald bring their 1992 vintage Swifts to the party as well. Paul Tucker’s son James is also in the same class with his own Van Diemen RF92, while Neil Hunt returns for another start in his Irish-built Mondiale M92S.
Super Classic B should also be exciting as it features cars built from 1982 to 1989, with a quartet looking for class honours. Juiceie Bruceie leads the way in points after taking two wins, with Edwin Hannah set to be the closest driver returning from the opening races as they lock horns in a pair of Reynard FF84s. They’ll be joined by two Van Diemens in the line up, with an RF86 for Steve Nixon and an RF88 for Leanne McShane, both drivers who will be looking to make an impression on this occasion.
There’s a couple of familiar names entered in Super Classic C for cars built between 1972 and 1981, top of which is Formula Ford legend Rick Morris who graces us with his presence aboard his trusty Royale RP29. He will certainly start the day as favourite, although he’s sure to get some attention on track from both Stuart Kestenbaum, another stalwart of the category who races where and whenever he can, and Alan Fincham, both regular racers of classic Formula Fords over the last few years. Finally, Ian Fernihough completes the grid in the oldest car in the field, as he returns to be the sole Super Classic D representative aboard his Titan Mk6.
