STORER STAYS ON TOP IN MX-5 CLUBMAN AT ANGLESEY
Harry Storer remains currently untouchable at the head of the Mazda MX-5 Clubman Championship standings after another successful day’s work at the latest rounds of the season, as the drivers made their first trip to Wales and magnificent Anglesey circuit.
It wasn’t quite as straightforward as Harry would have hoped at the start of Race 1, as he was initially challenged by front row mate Alan Hawkins in the opening corners. After both survived a lairy moment exiting Church, Storer managed to settle down into a rhythm that suited him best and was very much akin to his form in the Croft season opener.
Harry managed to remain ahead for the duration of the first 15-minute race, claiming his fourth win of the year with Hawkins rueing a missed gear shift that forced him to settle for 2nd. Thomas Mallett came close to stealing the place away from Hawkins but remained P3, ahead of Matt Allen and George Grant.
Conditions for the second race were damp and drizzly, but they didn’t faze Storer too much as he lead from pole once again, but the man on the move in the opening laps was Grant as he picked his way from 5th on the grid to 2nd place in just three laps.
With his sights set on trying to catch the leader, the Clapham North man pushed hard in his efforts to do so, but in the end had to settle for 2nd place, still an incredible result and his best behind the wheel of a Mk1 MX-5. As for Storer, he shrugged off any pressure from Grant to collect his fifth win and extend his lead at the head of the table. Hawkins managed to round off the overall podium in 3rd place, ahead of Dan Blake in 4th, while Rob Greensmith survived a frantic battle pack to claim 5th position.
There’s a short wait until the next MX-5 Clubman rounds, when they take to the long straight and varied corners of the Snetterton 300 circuit in Norfolk on July 31st!
