A mixture of bright sunshine and torrential rain storms met the competitors in attendance for the recent race day at Snetterton on the 300. Despite only two championships on the timetable, the main event was a thrilling 6 hour endurance epic that saw the drivers tackle both weather conditions in the same race.
The FunCup Championship boasted another bumper entry of 32 cars with former multiple champions Racelogic and race winners Team Trooper Iron Maiden on the front row of the grid. Throughout the first hour of the race, the weather remained bright and dry with reigning champions JPR Uvio charging through to the lead from 19th on the grid. Graham Roberts and Farquini Deott had managed to move their car into a lead of over 6 seconds from Racelogic and CCS Media, before the rain arrived and saturated the track throughout the second hour.
JPR Uvio continued to lead into hour 3 but just lost out to Sheradize UK as the race ticked over to half distance, with Team Trooper Iron Maiden not so far behind in 3rd. This didn’t last long and Roberts and Deott not only reclaimed the lead by the end of the 4th hour, but then went on to remain at the front throughout the last of the wet weather. By the time the chequered flag came out, the rain had stopped and the track had substantially dried out as JPR Uvio captured the win. Team Trooper Iron Maiden’s quartet of Paul Wighton, Harry Mailer, Jake Rattenbury and Anthony Reid clinched 2nd place on the podium, while the Track Torque 2Rent Domino’s pairing of Henry Dawes and Chris Hart picked up the final podium place.
The supporting act to the 6 hour FunCup race would be two races from the CAR Magazine Caterham Academy, with both the Green Group and White Group competing separately in their own championship battles. The Green Group subsequently went first with points leader Daniel French snatching the lead from the front row. From there, he pulled away at a canter to eventually take a superb victory by 12 seconds from James Murphy in 2nd and Neil Fraser in 3rd. Caterham CEO Graham MacDonald would manage to pick up a top 5 finish in 5th.
The White Group race was substantially shorter after a red flag forced an early end to the race, thanks to incidents involving Simon Goodwin and Al Melton. Before the race was stopped, a back and forth battle had been raging between eventual winner Andy Morgan and 2nd placed Tom Grensinger. James McCall had managed to keep in close proximity and held on to claim an excellent 3rd place at the time of the red flag.
