Motorbase Performance has announced it will run a Porsche 997 GT3R in the 2012 Avon Tyres British GT Championship for Porsche Carrera Cup GB regulars Michael Caine and Daniele Perfetti.
The Kent-based squad has competed in the Carrera Cup GB since 2004, the year the team formed. With twenty-six wins and one ‘Team's title’ to their name in the championship, the team have taken a sabbatical from the 2012 championship and instead will dovetail their British GT Championship programme with a three car attack on the BTCC.
“Porsche is a tried and trusted brand,” said team boss, David Bartrum, who sees British GT as a fresh challenge for his squad. “It is familiar ground, but the car is stepping up a league. It is a new challenge, but we’re going back to something we’re used to doing.”
Both drivers are familiar with Porsche machinery and Bartrum is confident both drivers will adapt well to the GT3 variant of the 997.
“Daniele has already done some GT racing in Europe and Michael has a strong heritage in GT racing. He competed at Le Mans for TVR and raced Porsches with Mike Jordan. Daniele has now learnt the British tracks during his Carrera Cup campaign last year.”
Bartrum believes that the pair will be able to challenge the latest GT3 machinery that is set to appear in the championship in 2012. “We understand the car and it is a product we know and love,” he said.
The 2012 British GT Championship begins on the Easter weekend at Oulton Park.
