CLUB RACING AT IT’S FINEST – MALLORY PARK RACEDAY 26/07/09

CATEGORIES:

A packed Sunday afternoon racing at Mallory Park, starting in the sun and finishing with rain teeming down – a proper summer weekend! The first race started with a cracker for the Club Formula Ford Midlands South in association with Richard Egger Insurance, only 12 cars but a superb win for Martin Galpin after a 20 minute tussle with returning champion Ed Moore. A second race for these cars in the Edwina Overrend Trophy gave Moore the victory he craved. As usual in the Ma5da MX5 Championship the results were not known until the last lap, with Jonathan Greensall beating Tom Roche by 0.2 of a second, both posting fastest laps on the last lap! The second race for these cars in the rain lead to a red flag on lap one after three cars had a crash after leaving Gerrards. The restart had a similar result, although this time the gap was some 7 seconds.

In the Dunlop TVR Peter Wheeler Memorial Race’s the awesomely quick cars of Danny Winstanley, Marc Hockin and Dean Cook provided such a blistering pace they practically lapped the entire field twice, with Winstanley victorious in the first race and Hockin in the second. Meanwhile in the much slower but closer Mighty Mini’s the similar specification of car meant that a battle raged between the top half dozen cars for the entire race, with Chris Morgan beating Peter Bonas by less than two tenths of a second on the line. With a number of notable absentees in the Super Mighty Mini’s the race seemed light for cars, but as usual action just as in its little sister, with Scott Kendal beating Neven Kirkpatrick to the line by the usual small margin of 0.3 seconds. The final race of the day for the ancient F3 cars of the 1950’s lead to a dominant win for Richard Ellingworth in his Martin F3, all 500cc of power providing a race speed of nearly 80 mph!
