Ford’s rising stars ready for action as 2020 season begins at Donington Park

The next generation of Ford-powered rising stars stand ready to make history as the 2020 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost begins this weekend [01-02 August] at Donington Park.

Britain’s FIA Formula 4 series has been on an enforced break for the past nine months due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, but heads to the 1.9-mile Leicestershire circuit this weekend ready to kick off another blockbuster season.

When we left the action – a mere 293 days ago – it was victory in a tense season finale that saw Zane Maloney crowned champion, an extended his Carlin team’s enviable record of success in the series.

The Farnham-based outfit are back to full strength in 2020, fielding karting stars Christian Mansell and Matias Zagazeta alongside Ginetta Junior Rookie champion Zak O’Sullivan in their quest for a fifth title.

Fortec Motorsport, however, have never looked in stronger shape to challenge for the big prize. Double race winner Luke Browning and fellow returnee Roberto Faria are both tipped to be fighting for victories at the front, and their new team mate Rafael Villagomez has been rapid during pre-season testing.

Reigning Ginetta Junior champion James Hedley will have a chance to renew several former rivalries after joining JHR Developments, but his sternest test could come from within.

He will join forces with multiple national karting champion Abbi Pulling and experienced junior tin-top racer Nathanael Hodgkiss – a late entry to the grid – as Steven Hunter’s team look to crack the winning formula.

Alex Connor’s strong end to last season will give Arden Motorsport high hopes in 2020.

He now assumes the defacto role as ‘team leader’ in a new-look line up for the Red Arrows, but will need to be at his best with another Ginetta graduate in Roman Bilinski and karting graduate Frederick Lubin on his coat tails.

The championship welcomes a new name to the grid in 2020 in Argenti Motorsport, who will run with technical support from Double R Racing.

With Scholarship winner Casper Stevenson, returning star Reema Juffali and promising Chilean prospect Nico Pino among their ranks – as well as two-time Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion Michael Meadows on the pit wall – the ingredients are there for a successful debut season.

Series graduates continue to achieve at each intervening step of the FIA Single Seater Pyramid, up to and including Formula 1 ® and its feeder series.

The ‘Class of 2020’ set out to begin their motorsport journeys this weekend, with the aim of delivering another action-packed, intriguing campaign over the next nine events and 26 races in order to start moving up the same pathway.

Once again for 2020, the F4 British Championship retains a high-profile spot as the sole single-seater support series on the UK’s premier motorsport package, the British Touring Car Championship.

The guarantees a huge trackside crowd (albeit at reduced capacity to previous seasons given the current climate) and live, free-to-air television coverage on ITV Sport.

The new season begins this weekend [01-02 August] at Donington Park, Leicestershire.
