MAZDA MX-5 CHAMPIONSHIP APPOINTS AVON AS NEW TYRE SUPPLIER

The BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship will hit the track this season with brand new rubber, after a deal between the series and Avon Tyres was confirmed within the last few days. This in turn will see the MX-5 Championship fall into the line with the rest of the BRSCC Mazda paddock, with the MX-5 SuperCup and MX-5 Super Series also continuing their existing relationship with Avon.

All cars will run with Avon’s ZV7 tyre, with a transition period in place to allow drivers to continue making use of their existing stock of tyres from previous supplier Hankook. The tyres have been tested extensively by a select number of drivers in private tests to ensure performance, reliability and overall quality. Along with this, all cars competing will run with new windscreen strips and rear number plate decals as part of the overall deal. Avon will also provide a dedicated support truck to ensure all drivers are suitably equipped over the course of a race weekend.

The Mazda MX-5 Championship comes off the back of another stellar season, with the 2018 campaign drawing over 90 registered drivers. Entry numbers regularly exceed 40 cars per race weekend, prompting a split grid system to allow all drivers to contest three races each per weekend. A promotion and relegation system is in place which can see competitors race from the back of the field through to the front by the end of the meeting. 2019 is set to be another bumper year with registrations already open for those drivers wishing to compete.

Avon Tyres have been a long-standing partner of the British Racing & Sports Car Club, with the manufacturer currently supplying a range of championships on its roster. Along with the aforementioned MX-5 SuperCup and MX-5 Super Series, Avon also provide tyres for all six of the Caterham Motorsport championship roster as well as the National and Northern Formula Ford Championships and the Formula Ford Festival.

BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship coordinator Mandy Andrew spoke of the deal saying: “I’m very pleased that we have been able to continue our existing relationship with Avon Tyres in the BRSCC Mazda paddock. The adoption of the Mk1s moving to Avon means that we will have a perfect correlation between Avon and all three of our series. My thanks go to Brian Davies and everyone at Avon for coming on board and we’re very much looking forward to seeing the quality of racing their new tyres will produce for us this season and beyond.”

The opening rounds of the 2019 BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship will take place on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in Kent on March 23/24.
