MX-5 CLUBMAN CHAMPIONSHIP COMPLETES SECOND YEAR WITH MARKED INCREASE IN AVERAGE GRID SIZE
One area of the paddock within the BRSCC’s portfolio that never ceases to provide healthy numbers is Mazda MX-5s, and while the pre-established Mk1 MX-5 Championship and Mk3 MX-5 SuperCup were both known quantities heading into 2022, much was being touted for the newest championship to join their ranks – the Mazda MX-5 Clubman Championship. The one-day, two-race format had proved popular in the inaugural 2021 season, so expectations were for more drivers to join in for the second year.
All the BRSCC’s hard work paid off as throughout 2022, all but two race weekends saw entry numbers of at least 30 cars, many of whom were joining the championship for the first time or indeed taking their first steps into racing full stop. The Mk1s certainly haven’t lost their charm or popularity, as there were plenty of new names making their debuts and many committed to several appearances throughout the year too.
The Silverstone International and Donington Park GP rounds tied for the largest grids of the year with 35 cars qualifying at each, and thanks to more consistent numbers across the year at other meetings, Autosport reported the championship in its end-of-season club reviews with an average grid size of 31, marking a superb 24% increase over the first season. To see this amount of growth within the space of one season is exceptional and something the BRSCC is incredibly proud of.
The BRSCC wishes to thank both outgoing coordinator Mandy Andrew, current coordinator Emma Palmer and the entire MX-5 coordination and admin team for all their hard work and efforts over the past two campaigns, plus all the teams and drivers that have helped make the championship such a success.
We also say a big thanks to Clapham North MOT – Est 1960, Downforce Radio, GAZ Shocks and Avon Tyres, all of whom have been key sponsors, partners and suppliers to the MX-5 Clubman Championship throughout 2022. Onwards to year number three in 2023!
