Some fantastic news has been revealed for both our Mazda MX-5 Championship and MX-5 SuperCup, which will definitely give drivers in both an extra incentive to go for the top step of the podium.
In a tie-up with Mazda Motor Europe, one driver from each of our MX-5 series will gain the chance to showcase their talents in the MX-5 European Cup final in Barcelona, Spain in July. The drivers who are leading their respective series (either the Mk1 Championship or Mk3 SuperCup) come May 30th will be invited to take part in the European Cup final event on July 1-4, which will see them compete alongside fellow MX-5 racers from other national championships in the UK, Austria, Netherlands, Poland and Sweden. They will all join 13 other racers which will include those from the officially sanctioned iRacing MX-5 European Cup, an online championship.
All drivers will be assessed on their driving abilities on the Fast Parcmotor circuit before 3 lucky participants are chosen to progress to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in September, where they will race in the Global MX-5 Cup Final. Those who make it will require an International C race licence, so any winners who haven’t acquired one at the time will be given training provided by Mazda themselves.
Speaking about the tie-up between Mazda and the BRSCCs MX-5s, Club Competitions Manager Dominic Ostrowski said “The BRSCC is delighted to support the Global Cup MX-5 prize drive programme. The Club is proud to run two very competitive championships for both the Mk1 and Mk3 but the opportunity to go to Barcelona and then hopefully onto the Global Cup race at Laguna Seca will raise the bar even further. The drivers will be fighting tooth and nail to get on that plane”.
Owen Mildenhall, PR Manager for Mazda Motors UK added “Mazda UK are delighted to offer British MX-5 racers the chance to win a drive in the 2016 MX-5 Global Cup race at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Ever since its launch in 1989, the MX-5 has been one of the world's most popular grassroots competition cars and its popularity with the UK racing community is as strong as ever. So it's great that we can give winning UK racers the chance to experience the latest incarnation of racing MX-5 – the 2016 Global Cup MX-5”.
Any of our MX-5 drivers who wish to be part of this fantastic incentive will need to ensure that they are signed up to the MX-5 European Cup by following this link HERE. This is a must in order to be eligible and (pardon for pointing out the obvious) you must also be fully registered for your respective championship as well.
All of this will mean that the next round for our pair of MX-5 championships at Anglesey will take on a whole new meaning, as not only will race wins and points be on offer but also there will be a vast number of drivers in both who’ll be clambering to be top of the table come the end of the weekend – because those who are will be on the plane on Barcelona!
